‘A really good Friday’ as 2-year-old found alive after 2 days

It was a good Friday for the search and rescue team after two-year-old Mfundo Mkhwanazi of the Emmuas area in Bergville was found alive this morning (29 June) and well following a two day search.

The community wept with joy when Warrant Officer Jacques Meyer from the Ladysmith K9 Search and Rescue Unit emerged carrying the little girl who was crying, cold and hungry.

Okhahlamba Search and Rescue Chief Fred Halgreen, with Pietermaritzburg Search and Rescue W/O Karl Gouws, Meyer and W/O Anil Lalbeharie were called to search for the missing child on Thursday evening. According to police, Mfundo was playing outside a family friend’s home when she went missing.

The party spent most of the evening searching the rough terrain nearby the home, where Mfundo was last seen. “We had to call off the search as light was getting bad,” said Gouws.

This morning, Friday, 29 June, Halgreen had in the help of pilot Jos Joubert, 65 Firemen, from the Okhahlamaba and Royal Nature Fire and three paramedics to assist the team with the search.

With the help and guidance of the Induna Mshengisen Hlathwayo, the community from Ward 2 rallied around the search party and made their way along the mountain, which is situated about 2km from the family home.

About an hour into the search a group, lead by Meyer, could hear the cries of the little girl.

She was safely carried down by the police officers where family and members of the community waited for her arrival. The little girl was wrapped in a blanket and rushed to the Emmuas Hospital for a check-up.

According to Halgreen and Gouws the infant was “extremely cold to the touch, but she was crying and screaming and at this stage that is all that matters.”

Halgreen told the Ladysmith Herald that this was a really good Friday as most of the scenes attended usually end in tragedy. Bergville police are investigating the incident.
