{ The event was concluded with the reading and signing of a promise:
*✋ I promise to help break the silence accompanying violence and abuse;
*✋ I promise not to commit violence, and to act when I see violence against women and children; and
* ✋I promise to teach those in my care the values of human dignity, equality and respect. }
If you cannot handle a woman, turn around and walk away. Police minister Bheki Cele shared his father’s advice to hundreds of young men on the #100MenMarch against violence against women and children on Tuesday. “When you lift your hand, you lose your masculinity. Make sure you do not touch her – protect and serve her. ”
The march presented an image of men from different sectors, races, political and religious backgrounds, which takes an united view to end violence against women and children.
The march to the Union Building began at 10:00. Ministers, deputy ministers, faith-based organizations, the empowerment program for victims, the police, nurses, motorcyclists, rugby players and many others took part in the march.
The goal of government’s # 100MenMarch is that all South Africans must act to ensure a safer society for women and children.
More needs to be done to prevent violence and abuse against women, to support victims of abuse and prosecute offenders.
The march is part of the centenary celebrations in honour of former President Nelson Mandela and Albertina Sisulu.
Cele feels an opportunity like this must be a daily phenomenon.
Yusuf Abramjee, community activist, agreed.
“We should not go from here and do exactly what we are not supposed to do,” Cele said. “Men, especially the young men who receive training in the South African Police Service, have invited you here so that you have an understanding: If women say ‘no’ then it should be ‘no’.
“When these women come battered, bruised, bloodied at the police station, don’t send them back home to negotiate,” he said.
“Make sure you don’t send her back, because…you are sending her back to her death.”, “Cele said.
He went on to call on women to take care of themselves and to walk away from abusive relationships.
“Any man that points his finger at you, turn around and walk away. Don’t ever stay with a man that puts his finger on your face (sic). Next time it will be a knife in your heart.
“Make sure you turn around and leave that. That is not a man, it’s an animal,” Cele said.
The event was concluded with the reading and signing of a promise:
*✋ I promise to help break the silence accompanying violence and abuse;
* ✋I promise not to commit violence, and to act when I see violence against women and children; and
* ✋I promise to teach those in my care the values of human dignity, equality and respect.
🕯️Then a torch was lit in honor of all women and children victims of violence.
