KZN Education slams violent protests targeting schools

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal says the damaging of school property will not be tolerated.

Dozens of protesters forced their way onto the premises of a school on Dunbar Road in Durban's Cato Manor area yesterday.

"We have full confidence in the police and we know that they are going to make sure that everything is back to normal. We want to warn the community against destroying government property," said the department's Kwazi Mthethwa.

"It therefore means that we must start afresh and fix the same property that existed. We are not sure whether we should go ahead and fix what has been deliberately damaged by the community or communities that desperately need infrastructure. Whoever has issues to raise, let them not target schools," said Mthethwa.

Meanwhile, police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property after parts of Wiggins Primary School was allegedly set alight by members of the community.

The flames damaged desks and chairs.

SAPS spokesperson, Thulani Zwane says more than a hundred people had targeted two schools in the early hours of the morning.

The protesters then dispersed when officers arrived on scene.

"Just after midnight [yesterday] police received information that there was a school attacked in the Cato Manor area. About 120 people were violent and damaging the school," Zwane said.

The motive is still unknown at this stage and no one has been arrested as yet.
