Limpopo: Provincial Commissioner condemns the brutal murder of three suspects

POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned in the strongest possible terms the brutal killing of three people by, allegedly by the community of Ga-Wally village in Mokwakwaila policing area outside Tzaneen in the early hours of Sunday, 26 May 2019.

Preliminary police investigations revealed that this brutal attack follows a chain of events that commenced at around 00h00 when an intruder allegedly got into a house of an elderly woman. The woman reportedly screamed for help and Community members of the said village consequently mobilized, hunted down the intruder until they caught three unknown middle aged men. After accusing them of being responsible for house robberies in the area, the three were then brutally assaulted with various objects.

The police responded swiftly to the frantic calls emanating from the area but on arrival, they were met by gruesome scenes of blood spattered area and three badly assaulted people lying dead. At that time, the crowd had already dispersed. The Cluster Commander of Tzaneen, Major General Maggy Mathebula visited the scene and mobilized all relevant stakeholders.

The Provincial Commissioner has ordered an immediate investigation into this mob justice incident and further called that all the people responsible must be hunted down as a matter of urgency. “The police will be merciless in dealing with any people who take the law into their own hands by attacking people they suspect of being criminals,” said General Ledwaba. “Community members are urged to desist from these attacks and should instead call the police to effect arrests.” Concluded General Ledwaba.

Three counts of murder have been opened for investigation.
