PARKTOWN – Police Management in Gauteng have applauded the successful joint intelligence-led operation, where police, on Tuesday 24 September 2019, foiled a planned armed business robbery allegedly targeting the Crown Mines area in Johannesburg.

At about 14:00, police spotted the suspects' vehicle traveling from Crown Mines direction towards Xavier Road in Ormonde, South of Johannesburg. The suspects allegedly failed to stop upon instruction of the police, leading to a high-speed chase and a shootout during which police returned fire after the suspects started shooting at the police.

The suspect's vehicle, a grey Nissan X-Trail confirmed as stolen in Johannesburg in August 2019, was intercepted at Lakewood Estate in Ormonde. The suspects alighted from the vehicle, ran off and continued firing shots at the police.
Police caught up with the suspects. Two succumbed to injuries while the third suspect was taken into custody.
No police members were injured.

A total of five (5) unlicensed firearms were recovered – three (3) rifles and two (2) handguns and ammunition; police also seized the suspects' vehicle, a Nissan X-Trail, a police hand-radio and other items police believe would have been used in the commission of the planned armed robbery.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has directed that an urgent investigation be conducted to establish possible linkage of the suspects and the unlicensed firearms to previous serious and violent crimes as police believe the three suspects could be behind the recent spate of robberies where Chinese business-people were targeted and other people robbed along the M2 highway and the Crown Mines vicinity.

Lieutenant General Mawela has also extended a special word of appreciation to the integrated team made up of a multi-disciplinary SAPS deployment, the DPCI (Hawks), both the Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni Metro Police Departments, Gauteng Traffic Police, Private Security and Tracker.
