55-year-old man has allegedly slit his throat with a steak knife in a suicide attempt on Monday morning in Dawncrest, Verulam, in Kwazulu-Natal.
The victim is a Pastor at a local church and has been reported to be on medication for depression in recent months.
At 07:45 Reaction Unit South Africa received a call from a resident in Kalia Road requesting assistance after his female neighbour was seen screaming for help.
Reaction Officers were despatched to the home and received a second call from a female relative informing of an attempted suicide at the premises.
“Upon arrival, Reaction Officers found a 5-year-old girl and an adult female screaming hysterically. Officers entered the home and found a man lying on a bed and covered in blood.
He was unresponsive and a knife was found by his bedside.
Paramedics found that the man had bled excessively due to a self inflicted injury to his jugular vein.
“Whilst trying to treat him, the victim went into a cardiac arrest. Medics moved him to the floor and commenced CPR. Paramedics re-established his pulse and breathing.
“Netcare 911 responded a short while later and assisted RUSA members,” said RUSA
He was transported to Mahatma Ghandi Memorial Hospital in Phoenix.
According to his wife, the man had asked her for a knife to open screws and fix a bedside lamp in their bedroom.
She handed him a knife and he closed the bedroom door. She returned to the room a short while later with their 5-year-old grandchild only to find him lying on the bed bleeding profusely.
