Patel trial: Police FOUND brother and he is kept under guard
Police found the brother of Polokwane’s double-murder accused Rameez Patel (30) after he seemingly disappeared on Monday. Razeen Patel is now guarded for his own safety in an unknown place by the police.
A member of the investigation team, who does not want to be named, says he does not want to give details about where the police found Razeen.
It is unclear whether he has sustained any injuries. Razeen has been called to testify in the trial of his brother Rameez, who is on trial for the murder of his wife, Fatima, 28, in the High Court in Polokwane.
On Monday, police found his white Nissan bakkie at the family house in Jaipur Street in the Nirvana neighborhood, Polokwane. The bakkie had blood on it’s door, and there was blood on the pavement.
Razeen did not answer his cellphone.
Ross Mafuna, another witness, was also gone, but he too has now been and is being held by the police in a place of safety with Razeen.
Adv. Lethabo Mashiane, state prosecutor, asked Judge Joe Raulinga on Monday to postpone the case until Monday (July 16) so that the status of the two witnesses could be determined.
Raulinga said, “I hope you get Razeen Patel alive.” Rameez, who represented himself in court on Monday because Tumi Mokwena, his attorney, did not appear at court, laughed at it and said, “I’m sure he’s pretty fine. He probably sleeps after a rough night.”
Fatima was killed in her townhouse in Nirvana, which she shared with Rameez and their children. There were no signs of a break-in, and nothing was taken from the house. She was beaten with a baseball bat against her head, then strangled so violently that it broke her thyroid bone. She then was shot in the face with a 9mm gun.
Rameez denies guilt and claim burglars assaulted and killed her.
The court heard from Rameez that he’d had a relationship with Nasreen Mayet while he and Fatima were married. Nasreen was in the High Court on Monday to support Rameez.
Rameez must appear in Polokwane magistrate’s court on July 30, for the murder of his mother, Mahejeen (52), in September 2017. She was shot by an unknown man in the family house in Jaipur Street. Rameez is still held in detention.
