Provincial Commissioner commends crime fighting efforts as suspects are nabbed and firearms recovered

POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has welcomed the arrest of two Robbery suspects in Musina and the recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition on Monday 16 March 2020.

The suspects, aged 26 and 30, allegedly entered the local Clothing Store in Musina CBD and pretended to purchase something. Suddenly, one of them produced a firearm and demanded money. They then robbed the Store an amount of cash and cellphones before fleeing from the scene.

The Police were then notified about the armed robbery and reacted swiftly. They were busy on the lookout when they spotted a suspicious white Toyota Corolla and then followed it up. The suspects allegedly sped off towards Mmatswale Informal Settlement on the outskirts of Musina town.

The police pursued the suspects until the driver lost control and crashed into another vehicle. Two of the suspects were then cornered and arrested and the others managed to evade arrest.

During the arrest, police recovered two firearms hidden inside the air filter under the bonnet. Preliminary investigations indicated that the firearms were reported stolen during 2019 in Caltonville and Funland policing precincts in Gauteng and are linked to two house robbery cases that were reported separately in both areas.

The suspects are likely to be linked with other robbery cases around Musina. They will appear in Musina Magistrate's court tomorrow, Thursday 18 March 2020 on charges of Armed Robbery and Possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Manhunt for the remaining suspect, who was the driver of the said vehicle, is still underway and anyone with information is requested to contact Colonel Simon Mukwevho on 082 759 4931 or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the nearest police.
