Public warned of beggars posing as disabled persons and targeting motorists

These pictures taken a few hours apart are of a male posing as a disabled person at a traffic light and then of him walking as normal a short while later.

Reaction Unit South Africa has responded to several callouts from the public who have fallen victim to beggars & car guards posing as disabled with the intention to collect money or rob. The suspects in most cases approach a female driver after removing their shirts and twist their arms & legs to appear disabled. The unsuspecting motorist then opens their windows to hand over change & the suspect usually grabs their mobile phones or handbags and flee.

The male in this picture has not been involved in any robberies. However, he collects monies at the R102 & Inanda Road intersection near the BP Garage in Verulam. He removes his clothes, twist his body & appears to be disabled. He then dresses up and walks away every evening after collecting cash from passing motorist.

The public is warned to refrain from fully opening their windows at robots & stop signs to avoid falling victim to this scam.
