Several suspects arrested for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition in Bellville and Mitchells Plain #GunsOffTheStreets
Western Cape: Efforts to fight the proliferation of illegal firearms in the Western Cape have once again resulted in three firearms recovered in Bellville and Mitchells Plain and several suspects apprehended for the possession of illegal firearms and ammunition.
In the first incident members attached to Bellville SAPS were busy patrolling Bellville CBD on 2019-02-12 at about 19:30 when they stopped and searched a suspicious looking male and found in his possession a 9mm pistol with serial number filed off, four rounds and one cartridge. The suspect could not respond when asked who the owner of the firearm was. He was arrested and charged with possession of illegal firearm and ammunition and will soon appear in court.
The second incident on Tuesday, 2019-02-12 at approximately 11:15 the vigilance of Mitchells Plain Sector Commanders resulted in the arrest of a suspect for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The members responded to a complaint of a shooting in Ruwenzori Street, Tafelsig. While patrolling in the area of Pyrenees street, the members noticed a person fitting the description of the suspect. They stopped and searched the suspect and found a Star 9mm short pistol, magazine and six 9mm rounds in his possession. Police arrested the 37-year-old male. The suspect faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and will appear in Mitchells Plain Magistrate Court once charged.
In a separate incident in Mitchells Plain On Tuesday 2019-02-12 at about 23:00 members attached to the Mitchells Plain police were busy with crime prevention duties in Cascade Street, Tafelsig. They spotted a suspicious male and stopped and searched him and found a Petro Beretta 9mm pistol, one magazine and 14 x 9mm rounds in his possession. A 35-year-old man was arrested, suspect faces charges of possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition and will appear in Mitchells Plain Magistrate Court once charged.
This swift response by members ensured that illegal fire-arms and ammunition were removed from the communities.
