'Wife beater' running from the law was arrested in Free State
An alleged wife beater of Odendaalsrus in the Free State was arrested in Bethlehem in the east of the province.
Police had searched for Lodie van Dyk (36) since Saturday, after his wife, Domonique Vergottini, layed a charge of attempted murder against him. He allegedly assaulted her and stabbed her with a knife.
A Facebook group, Support Marina, was founded more than a year ago to support one of Van Dyk's alleged victims, Marina Janse van Rensburg, on her recovery path after he struck her with his and fist in July 2017 and pulled a lot of her hair out of her head.
Van Dyk got bail at the end of July 2017 and appeared on Odendaalsrus 's magistrate's court on 1 September on charges of assault.
According to a Facebook group entry, Van Dyk claims he caught Janse van Rensburg flirting with one of his friends. He also argued that he came across her where she used drugs and chased after her, after which she fell down a staircase and injured herself.
After the Facebook group was started, Van Dyk complained on social media that he found more than 2 000 "threat messages”. “It upsets a person, " he wrote. “I have no life anymore."
The case has since been delayed continuously. The trial would have begun in April this year, but it did not materialize. "The legal system has let me down, " wrote Janse van Rensburg on April 10."They called me to say the case was delayed until further notice."
While Van Dyk was out on bail all the time, he supposedly married Domonique Vergottini, and allegedly also assaulted her.
Thursday in the early hours, Support Marina wrote on Facebook: “Finally he was arrested. The police found him in Bethlehem." And a few hours later, "I hope the justice system is waking up now!" Capt. Stephen Thakeng confirmed that Van Dyk was arrested in Bethlehem on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Janse van Rensburg's sister, Maryna Janse van Rensburg, posted a composite picture of three of Van Dyk's four alleged victims on Tuesday. “Would you like to know how many more?" She wrote. Maryna claimed that Van Dyk had also assaulted her on occasion when she tried to protect her sister from him. She stated that Van Dyk was married at least two times before, claiming that he assaulted both of his ex-wives. A fifth woman claims he has assaulted her when she tried to protect Domonique against him.
