This morning we received reports of smoke over the southern parts of the Free State and Northern Cape (Philipstown, De Aar and Gariepdam) and the question was asked: is this smoke originating from the George fire?

The answer is: it seems to be likely, as the George fire spread to Tsitsikamma and Stormsriver yesterday. The wind over the interior where the smoke was observed on the satellite this morning (06:15 SAST) came from the south, carrying the smoke further northwards.
