Accused remanded in custody for alleged murder of his girlfriend

POTCHEFSTROOM- A 37-year-old Tebogo Setlhare was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Brits Magistrates’ Court yesterday facing charges of kidnapping, robbery, murder, defeating the ends of justice and possession of suspected stolen property.

The accused’s court appearance stems from his apprehension on Monday, 25 November 2019, at Mmakau village after being linked to alleged murder of his girlfriend, Kgaugelo Tshwae (28). The latter’s burnt body was found inside her vehicle in the bushes on Monday, 24 November 2019 in Mapetla Section, Mmakau. According to information available at this stage, reports suggest that Tshwae went failed to return home on Sunday, 24 November 2019 after vacation at Hartbeespoortdam with friends.

Tshwae’s mother was at a police station in Ga-rankuwa, Gauteng in the morning on Monday, 25 November 2019 to report a missing person when she got a call that her daughter’s body was found in Mmakau. Subsequently, Tshwae’s body was positively identified by family members and sadly, accompanied by the accused.

Following preliminary, but intensive investigations into the matter, the suspect was linked with the alleged murder after Tshwae’s bank card was found in his possession. As result, he was arrested for kidnapping, robbery, murder, defeating the ends of justice and possession of suspected stolen property.

He is expected to re-appear in court on Wednesday, 11 December 2019 for formal bail application.

The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, strongly condemned the incident which occurred just before commencement of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. She emphasised that Gender Based Violence is one of national priorities and that the police will not hesitate to turn the tide against anyone who commits crimes such as this one.
