According to the SAWS Act 8 of 2001, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) is the single authoritative voice in terms of issuing severe weather-related warnings over South Africa.
Referring to the SAWS Amendment Act 48 of 2013, no person may publish, disseminate or distribute weather-related hoaxes. If found guilty for the first time (second time) the person may receive a fine not exceeding 5 million rand (10 million rand) or imprisonment not exceeding 5 years (10 years). That person can also be held liable for loss or damages caused to other people.
Should it be found that the person gained any advantage, the court may order a fine against the convicted person.
Therefore, refrain from sharing weather-related hoaxes. By informing us of people contributing to the problem we will be able to establish a chaos free country. #BeWeatherSMART
