PORT ELIZABETH – A brave shop owner and his assistant fought with a suspect who pointed a firearm at him and demanded money.
It is alleged that on Friday, 16/08 at about 09:50 , a 30-year-old male was behind the counter of his shop at the corners of Westly and Africa Streets in Walmer location when an unknown man walked in and took dish washing liquid and a bottle of oil off the shelf. As the complainant was placing the items into a bag, the male pulled out a firearm and pointed it at him. The complainant was instructed to open the gate behind the counter and come out.
The complainant called out to his assistant who was at the back of the shop. The suspect demanded money and when he was denied any cash, he assaulted the assistant on the head with the firearm. The complainant and the witness attacked the suspect and managed to overpower him. The firearm was kicked under the bed. The complainant managed to pin down the suspect while his assistant went for help.
The 20-year-old suspect was arrested and detained on a charge of attempted business robbery. The pistol was not reported stolen – it belonged to a deceased person from Mthatha. The suspect will appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrate court on Monday, 19 August 2019.
