Eastern Cape: #Bethelsdorp Task Team arrested and confiscated firearms
Port Elizabeth: The seizure of illegal firearms in the Northern areas is of paramount importance as these weapons are used by #gang members to commit serious and violent crimes.
On Sunday, 30/09 , the Bethelsdorp Task Team members arrested two suspects and recovered two firearms in separate incidents.
At about 09:20 this morning , the members were patrolling in William Slammert Drive in Bloemendal when they saw three males walking. When the males noticed the police, one male acted suspicious and started walking in another direction. Members then chased after this male and succeeded in apprehending him in a church yard. The immediate vicinity was searched and a .38 revolver was found lying next to where he was arrested. The 25-year-old suspect was arrested and detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.
At about 12:15, the members were patrolling in Kwanoxolo when they spotted a well-known gang member. As he saw the police vehicle, he started running. A foot chase ensued and he was found hiding in a house. The house was searched and a 9mm firearm was found in the room. He was arrested and detained on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm.
Both suspects will appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court soon.
The Cluster Commander for Mount Road, Major General Thembisile Patekile commended the members for their alertness and swift reaction to suspicious behaviour of persons. ‘We will continue in our targeted approach to policing in our efforts to arrest these criminals who are committing crimes with firearms,’ added Major General Patekile. #Back2Basics #PoliceVisibility
