Krugersdorp Murders — Marinda Steyn’s testimony of why they started killing people
In the second part of her testimony, Marinda Steyn testified that Cecilia did not know about any of the killings and the group chose to keep it from her.

On Thursday (28 November) after lunch, the trial of the three remaining accused in the so-called Krugersdorp murders case continued in the South Gauteng High Court, with Marinda Steyn testifying, Krugersdorp News reports.

The week started off with Cecilia Steyn, thought to be the mastermind behind the 11 murders, giving her testimony.

In May, Marinda was handed down 11 life sentences and 115 years’ imprisonment, all to run concurrently. She will spend the rest of her life behind bars.

Le Roux Steyn, (Marinda’s son) testified earlier that Cecilia had seen Mikeila Valentine (the wife of one of the accused, Zak Valentine) as a loose end that needed tying up.

Marinda, however, testified that Valentine had told her that his wife wanted to go to the police, and that she was unfaithful to him. Valentine had a key to his house made for Marinda and also gave her a remote control to gain access to his and Mikeila’s property.

Marinda testified that on that fateful day Mikeila had the day off and said she was going to sleep late. Marinda went into the house and killed Mikeila.

“I had to make sure that I get back home, get rid of the evidence, and get cleaned up and go to Cecilia’s house to watch movies,” she said. She had to make sure that she would not be linked to Mikeila’s death.

Marinda testified that Valentine told her that he was taking an estate agent to the house and they would discover Mikeila’s body together.

Although Le Roux testified that Cecilia helped to plan the Meyers’ murder, Marinda told the court that she and Valentine planned it. She said during that time Valentine wanted to experiment with arrows and swords.

They went to the Meyers’ house a few times before the murders, at times finding the couple’s children at home. On one occasion the Meyers were not home. On the day of the murders the Meyers invited them into their home. She said she wore long sleeves and jewellery to cover her tattoos and they did not give their real names. Mr Meyer allegedly had told them on a previous occasion that he had R42 million in his safe.

After talking for a while Marinda took out a gun and told the couple that they were being robbed.
The plan was to rob them, tie them up and leave them in their unfinished pool so that no one would find their bodies.

Once the couple was tied up, Valentine pulled out a knife. She said Valentine ‘went berserk’ while arguing with Meyer and stabbed the couple.

She took the key to the safe from Mr Meyer’s belt and went looking for the safe. Valentine stopped her and told her that they needed to leave immediately.
She testified that things went wrong that day, things they didn’t plan for. On their way back they threw the evidence out the car window.

John Barnard, another state witness who was sentenced in 2016, previously testified that after the murders, Marinda phoned Cecilia to tell her the Meyers were dead. She however said that they did not want Cecilia to find out what they were doing.

Marinda said they became suspects after the Meyers’ murders and were told they had to undergo lie detection tests.
Valentine was afraid of doing the test and told her that they needed to fake his death. In earlier testimonies it was alleged that Valentine’s death was faked in order to get the money from his life insurance policy.

She alleged that at that stage she was not aware that Valentine had recruited her son (Le Roux) to help cleaning up and getting rid of evidence.

The three of them – Marinda, Valentine and Le Roux – then planned Valentine’s ‘murder’.On 16 December 2016, Marinda, Valentine, Le Roux and Barnard left town. Valentine picked up Jarrod Jackson and the two, together with Le Roux, drove in front while Marinda and Barnard drove in a car behind them. She said that after a while she saw the car in front swerving and was later told that Jackson had tried to fight back.

They pulled over and called her to check if he was dead; however, he started breathing again and they injected him with insulin Valentine had supplied.
They drove on for a while, stopped the car, put Jackson’s body in the driver seat and set the car alight.
They drove back towards Krugersdorp and dropped off Valentine.

Marinda testified that the next morning she told everyone that she could not get hold of Valentine and Cecilia started calling police in the area where he was supposed to be. Before she could warn Valentine the police had already informed them of the accident.

She said she never told Cecilia about the murders because by that time things had already gone too far. She was afraid of being rejected, getting caught and that Cecilia’s health would deteriorate. She was leading a double life.
She said after that they had to look after Valentine and funds were running low. Le Roux allegedly suggested they go after Valentine’s former clients, the ones who had money.

When they went to McGregor’s house he invited them in, and just like in the Meyers’ case she pulled out a gun. She said he laughed at them and Le Roux pushed him to the ground. She said she shot him when it looked as if he was ‘launching himself at Le Roux’.

They couldn’t find any cash or cards in his home so she went into his bank account online and transferred money to one of her accounts.

When asked why Le Roux had told the court that Marcel was also there, she said that he had been jealous of his sister ever since she was born.

She and Le Roux planned the rest of the murders to look after Valentine. At one point Valentine started looking for a job and became reckless.

“After we were arrested it took me almost a year to gather up courage to tell Cecilia and Marcel that I was involved in the murders,” Marinda said.

When asked about Ria Grunewald, she said that she always thought that Grunewald had written the Know Your Enemy course and Cecilia had just helped with research.
She said that Grunewald and Cecilia were in a romantic relationship and that Grunewald became obsessed.
“Ria was very jealous, she would not allow any of us to be alone with Cecilia,” she explained.

She recounted one time when Grunewald followed her to Cecilia’s home and eavesdropped through the window.
The trial continues today, with Marinda on the stand once again.
