Man to appear in court for illegal possession of #Abalone

Western Cape: The police in the Province are working tirelessly to close down syndicates who are stealing our maritime resources. This morning members from the Cape Town K-9 Unit were conducting crime prevention patrols in Lwandle when they spotted a dark grey Nissan hardboby bakkie of which the two occupants appeared suspicious. Police tested the vehicle registration number and it was found to be false.

At about 07:15, they pulled the vehicle over on the N2 at the Broadlands road traffic intersection and the driver of the vehicle jumped out and fled on foot. Police searched the vehicle in the presence of the passenger and found numerous bags containing abalone which was covered with building sheets, behind the seats of the vehicle. More bags of abalone were also recovered from the back of the vehicle. A total of 5030 units of abalone were found worth an estimated street value of just under a million rand.

The man (39) was arrested on charges under the Living Marine Resources Act and will appear in Strand Magistrates’ Court.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Western Cape, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the members involved for their vigilance.
