DO'S AND DON'T WHEN YOU REPORT A PERSON MISSING In SA. Don't forget when you report a missing and if they say you must wait 24 hrs /48 hrs and if they say it takes 2 days for a sms for the enq or ob none of this true as it is not a criminal matter it is a missing person.and not a crime till proven to be one. Also if the officer tells you to go visit the morgues and hospitals first tell them that is the investigating officers job. There are no excuses for not filling a form 55. Just take a hard copy photo with you or they may say they cant open the case till they get one. Also not true. Your rights are that the officer fills in a form 55 immediately and the stand by detective must handle the investigation until the head of detectives allocates the case to a detective. This applies for an adult. For children the officer must phone the FCS UNIT in to collect the docket immediately as they do the investigations for anyone under the age of 18. It is a specialized unit and they have the mandate to do the necessary when child is found. They must charge the suspect if one involved and take the minor for a medical and call in social workers to take over and give the child and family the support they need. If all else fails tell them to read their SOP. and give the public the service delivery they entitled to.
