STOKVELS
IRS has investigated many Ponzi and pyramid schemes operating in South Africa. We are often asked whether stokvels are Ponzi or pyramid schemes. The simple answer is NO.
So what is a stokvel?
Stokvels are an informal way of saving or investing money built on trust between friends and associates. According to the National Stokvel Association of South Africa (Nasasa), there are more than 800 000 such groups in South Africa, saving a collective of over R44 billion a year.
Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people who set up what masquerades as a stokvel but is in actual fact just a means of defrauding hard earned people of their money.
