Operation Servamus sustains its impact on cross-border crime #CrossBorderCrimes

EASTERN CAPE – Drugs, fines, arrests recovery of stolen stock and confiscation of illicit tobacco were some of the successes achieved on day two, (07 August 2019) of Operation Servamus 2019. Operation Servamus’ objective is to break the backbone of cross-border crimes like movement of illegal people to South Africa, stock theft, drug trafficking, vehicle theft to mention a few.

This multi-disciplinary operation that comprises of government departments like Department of Home Affairs, Provincial Traffic, South African Defence Force, SAPS and Department of Environmental Affairs covers three clusters close to inland borders like, Maclear, Aliwal North and Matatiele. The first day of work began on 6 August 2019 with execution of vehicle stop and check points on major roads connecting major towns and neighbouring countries and provinces.

On Wednesday, 07 August 2019, the operation was conducted in the Rossouw, Dordrecht and Elliot areas aimed to combat stock theft, movement of illegal people, illicit drugs, tracing wanted suspects, vehicle stop and searches, stock post visits, compliance inspections, rural patrols and disruptive operations.

Two murder suspects aged between 25 and 27 were arrested while one 25-year-old female from Indwe was arrested for possession of and dealing in dagga and mandrax. One male suspect was traced and arrested for Murder as he was on a list of wanted suspects.

Our members that are in Lesotho embarked on the operation on the 06 August 2019 and recovered five (5) cattle at Hacharlie location. Two (2) male suspects were arrested and charged for possession of suspected stolen livestock. Another (18) cattle were recovered from ha Mofotho, Ha mutloang and Khatleng areas. A total of fifteen (15) goats and three (3) horses were recovered along the Orange River and all the recovered livestock are impounded at qachasneck pending bonafide identification.

In Matatiele Compliance inspections at local businesses to check expired stock and illicit cigarettes led to the removal of non-compliant stock being removed from the shelves. All the stock were confiscated by Department of Environmental Affairs.
