Our thoughts are with our director, Glenda Paul, and her family, following the brutal murder of her cousin, Bennie Paul, in Kwazulu-Natal, yesterday.
His car had broken down on the way back from a wedding. He and the friend he was travelling with were approached by criminals who demanded Bennie’s phone. He complied. After that, and for reasons only known to the murderers, they stabbed him to death. His friend was also stabbed but survived and is in hospital.
South Africa is in the midst of a crime wave, the likes of which are not being experienced anywhere else in the world. More people are being murdered in South Africa on a daily basis that the amount of people dying in war zones.
If the South African state law enforcement agencies do not concede that they have lost the war on crime and institute a state of emergency, South Africa will quickly descend into absolute chaos.
The South African government needs to find budget to capacitate the SANDF to deploy in support of the police, and to deputise or grant peace officer status to registered, vetted and qualified security officers in the employ of registered and recognised security companies.
How much longer must we wait? Every single South African has been impacted by crime. The time to act is now.
RIP Bennie and the dozens of other South Africans killed every day.
