As the countdown to the 2018 International Nelson Mandela Day draws closer, the Minister of Police, Mr Bheki Cele and the National Commissioner, General Khehla Sitole, are readying themselves to visit the community of Boitekong in Rustenburg to donate 67 minutes of their time performing good deeds for those in need.

The day was declared International Nelson Mandela Day by the United Nations. Annually on this day, people across South Africa and other parts of the world devote 67 minutes of their time by extending a helping hand through charitable work to those in need.

The 67 minutes signify the 67 years Madiba dedicated to the service of others. On 18 July, former President Nelson Mandela who died on 5 December 2013 at the age of 95, would have turned 100 years had he still lived.

This year marks the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth under the theme ‘Be the Legacy’. This day is globally set to celebrate the world icon’s birthday by acting on the idea that each person has the power to change the world.

Government has also declared the day as a National Day of Service, which is an encouragement for all South Africans to go out in their numbers to follow in Tata Madiba’s footsteps to make a difference by donating time to humanitarian efforts and disadvantaged communities to inspire a positive change that promotes the culture of Ubuntu.
