#Sentencing
NORTHERN CAPE – De Aar Regional Court found Thamboer Seekoei (26) guilty on three counts of rape and sentenced him to an effective 30 years imprisonment. Thamboer raped two women aged 47 and 53 in two separate incidents in Phillipstown, Northern Cape. On the 14th February 2016 he raped 47-year-old woman. He was arrested subsequent to the incident and was later released on bail. While out on bail he further raped a 53-year-old woman more than once.
Thamboer was re-arrested and charged with two counts of rape. The state perceived him to be dangerous to the community, denied him bail and he was kept in police custody. During the trial the victims shared the light regarding Thamboer’s modus operandi.
He lured his victims under false pretences. He would ask that they should accompany him to his house to fetch money. While he was inside his house with the victim, he would overpower them and sexually assault them.
On Monday, 09 July 2019, De Aar Regional Court sentenced Thamboer as follows;
•Rape count 1 – 10 years imprisonment
•Rape count 2 – 10 years imprisonment
•Rape count 3 – 10 years imprisonment
The Northern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Risimati Shivuri commended the investigating team, from Pixley Ka Seme Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offence Unit, Captain Selomie Coetzee and Warrant Officer Sehako for their exceptional investigation in these cases by ensuring that justice was served. “Meticulous investigation by members of the South African Police Service continues to instil hope on victims of crime” he said.
