SAPS and International Law Enforcement agencies to share information on fighting Intellectual Property Crime #IPCrimeConference

Interpol, the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories and the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition will deliver the 13th Interpol Law Enforcement Intellectual Property Crime Conference in Cape Town on 22 and 23 October 2019.

The Minister of Police, General Bheki Cele, MP will give the keynote address during the opening ceremony on Tuesday, 22 October 2019 which will start at 09:00. The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, Lieutenant General Bonang Mgwenya and the National Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, will also be in attendance.

Purposefully, the conference aims at creating a critical platform for skills development, skills transfer, knowledge sharing, and adoption of best universal practices in respect of illicit trade of goods and services. Under the theme: ‘Fighting IP Crime through Innovation and Cooperation’ the Conference will provide an international educational platform and networking tools for public and private sector organisations.

The objectives of the Conference are as follows, to:

Highlight the importance of cross-sector cooperation and encourage further collaboration
Share law enforcement case studies and recognize successes
Promote operational best practices
Share experiences and insight from the private sector
Showcase the activities of the Illicit Goods and Global Health Unit
Promote the International Intellectual Property Crime Investigators College (IIPCIC).

The conference has been held annually since the first meeting in Canada in 2007, with the last conference presented in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Given the transnational nature of crimes related to illicit goods and global health, and the need for cross-sector and cross-border collaboration, Interpol’s involvement is essential.
