SAPS members health, a top priority!
Pretoria: It is said that, having healthy employees in an organisation leads to a happy and stress-free working environment, thus leading to high levels of productivity and an improvement in service delivery. It is against this background that, The South African Police Service recently held its 1st Wellness Indaba from the 24th to 26th October 2018, at the Tshwane SAPS Academy in Pretoria.
The Wellness Indaba created a platform for the Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) practitioners within the Service to deliberate on the organisations journey to a healthy workforce by discussing issues affecting members on a daily basis, with a view of devising methods of improving and promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst members of the Service.
EHW is a component within the SAPS and employs experts in four support professions including Chaplains, Psychological Service staff, Social Work Services and Occupational Health Practitioners. It currently boasts 604 practitioners nationwide and its services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for members.
Through the SAPS fitness program, the Service has established a policy relating to fitness. This policy has been drafted to give all members an opportunity to have time to exercise, with some offices having their own gyms. In some cases, members are enrolled in a 6 weeks Healthy Lifestyle program to assist them to improve their overall wellness. Lastly, the Service has 21 funded sporting codes that members may participate in, to keep their fitness levels on par.
