Eastern Cape: In an effort to squeeze crime to zero, the South African Police Service continues to nourish its partnership with governmental and non-governmental organisations

The Minister of Police Bheki Cele together with the National Commissioner General Khehla Sitole launched the Traditional Policing t Nqadu Great Place that will address issues on crime. The aim is to build capacity and strengthen partnerships in order to prevent crime or reduce the fear of crime by jointly identifying the root causes of crime and have a multi-disciplinary approach to address crime and the fear of crime.

The launch also forms part of the Community Centre Policing approach, which is an imperative policing model that cuts across the Constitution, right down to the few policies and legislations, as outlined in both the traditional affairs as well as the policing mandate.

The Traditional Policing Model will complements the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on 15 March 2016 between the South African Police Service, Department of Traditional Affairs and the National House of Traditional Leaders to operationalise and ensure sustainable partnership policing within the traditional communities.

Minister of Police, Bheki Cele reiterated the importance of traditional policing and alleviating criminal activities within rural communities. The pilot project is yet to expand throughout all Easter Cape Kingdoms.

MEC of Safety, Transport and Liaison, MS Weziwe Tikana outlined the purpose of the day to say, "We want a partnership with the royalty and traditional authority. This is bringing police service to the people, aimed at improving peace and stability”. The Provincial commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lt Gen Ntshinga said a business case was crafted and approved by management and the National Commissioner followed by an internal consulting meeting with Cluster commanders and the House of Traditional authority were consulted. The package of resources and intervention includes a victim friendly Centre, a missing persons reporting service, sexual offences, certification of documents, victim support and issue of protection order for domestic violence.

A stop and search operation, as part of Traditional policing launch, was conducted at the entry point of Idutywa as well as #Safetyfriday festive season operations.
