POTCHEFSTROOM – On Monday, 04 May 2020, three suspects namely, Tebogo Zemema (36), Mzwandile Sithole (27) and Marks Maleka (25) appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court for possession of an unlicensed firearm and conspiracy to commit robbery.
Their court appearance stems from an incident reported on Saturday, 02 May 2020. Hartbeesfontein police and members of the Tactical Response Unit (TRT) were conducting routine patrols in Hartbeesfontein when they spotted two suspicious vehicles; a blue Audi A4 and a silver Hyundai i20. The driver of the Hyundai sped off when he noticed the police, who chased the vehicle and managed to stop and search it.
During the search, an unlicensed 9mm pistol with ammunition, a jamming device, balaclavas, hand gloves and cable ties were found inside the vehicle. The suspect could not account for these items. The driver, who was wearing a courier company uniform and had a spare one in the boot, was immediately arrested. Furthermore, the TRT members managed to stop the Audi with two more suspects inside. Cable ties were also found inside the vehicle. The two suspects were arrested and both vehicles were confiscated.
The next court appearance will be on Thursday, 07 May 2020, for a formal bail application.
