The person pictured, Michael Victor van Zyl, purports to be a private investigator and debt collector.

In terms of a statement received from the Council for Debt Collectors, van Zyl ceased to be registered as a debt collector in 2006 after being found guilty of charges brought against him by the Council for Debt Collectors.

In terms of PSIRA, van Zyl’s application to be registered as a private investigator was rejected by PSIRA in 2003.

In correspondence sent out by van Zyl, he claims to be an affiliate of the ACFE. The ACFE South African Chapter has confirmed that van Zyl’s membership ceased as an affiliate in 2012.

In terms of the Private Security Industry Regulatory Act, act 56 of 2001, it is a criminal offence to practice as a private investigator without being registered with PSIRA.

In terms of the Debt Collectors’ Act, act 114 of 1998, it is a criminal offence to practice as a debt collector without being registered with the CDC.

A criminal case has been opened by IRS in respect of the alleged misrepresentations made by van Zyl.

Van Zyl is currently based in Durban, KZN.
